Piranha Juvenile Committee Update

Dear Fellow Piranha members,
 
As some of you may know a motion was passed at last year’s AGM to look into the creation of a Junior Section within Piranha. Our Chairman Bernard Hanratty sought expressions of interest from members regarding setting up a committee. Those that volunteered for the committee were as follows:-

Gordon Grant 
Mark McInerney
Jacqui Dunphy
Barry McIntyre
Stephen Eustace  
 
We met with other clubs that have active Juvenile sections that are currently up and running.   Our purpose was to understand the necessary criteria for the successful launch of a Junior Section.   The criteria that was deemed to be most critical is to have a quorum of families within the club who had junior interest in participating in the sport,  where the parents of those families would facilitate training, etc.

Our next task therefore, was to gauge the level of interest within our membership which we did by means of a survey. The response rate was extremely poor and we were well short of the quorum of families deemed necessary.
 
The conclusion of the Junior Committee is that at this time there are insufficient numbers within our club to warrant setting up a Junior Section.   The Club however will establish a Junior Membership at zero cost, so that the children of members can register under the name of Piranha.   The Club is tendering for a new provider of gear and we will include a junior set of kit in the specifications of that tender.     
 
If members have children that are interested in participating in triathlon they should look at the event calendar on the Triathlon Ireland website to see events in our area.  Here is a sample of these events:

14th June – Pulse Kids Aquathlon Series 1
13th July – Pulse Kids Aquathlon Series 2
15th July – Two Provinces Sprint kidathlon
24th July – Kinsale kidathlon
11th Aug – Pulse Kids Aquathlon Series 3
 
It is the recommendation of the committee that this proposal with regard to the establishment of a Junior Section should be re-visited in 2 years from now.
