Ironman has never been more present in the minds of Piranha members. Not only have so many Piranhas completed the Dublin Ironman 70.3 masterly directed by our own John Wallnutt, but Aileen Flynn is the first Piranha to qualify for the Ironman world championships in Kona. And …. Derek Leahy qualified for the Ironman 70.3 world championships in the Dublin race.
In recognition of the great personal athletic achievement, and the cost of participation, the club is to establish a support mechanism for members who have qualified for Ironman or Ironman 70.3 world championships. The support will be a maximum of €500 for any one member, but no more than €1,000 in aggregate for the club in any one financial year. If more than 2 members qualify, the €1,000 support fund will be allocated pro rata to those members. The detailed policy is set-out below.
The support is not retrospective, but we do want to recognise the one current member and one past member who participated in previous Ironman 70.3 world championships. Mr Steven Moody, most recent but one club record holder for Ironman distance, participated in the 70.3 world championships in Las Vagas in 2013 having qualified at Antwerp 70.3 in 2013. Robert Keogh, a past member, participated circa 2009.
Congratulations to Aileen who will participate in Kona in 2015, and to Derek who is know eligible to participate in the 70.3 worlds in Australia in 2016.
Club Support for Ironman World Championships Policy:
- The support to race costs applies to Ironman World Championships and Ironman 70.3 World Championships only
- The entry must be earned through competition – not lottery or purchase
- The subsidy is available only to full members who are in the club 3+ years
- The subsidy is available to members once in a lifetime
- The recipient member must agree to include the Piranha logo on his/her tri suit, complete a race report and include PiranhaTri on social media posts
- The funding in each year is dependent on continued strong financial status of the club, as determined by the committee in the relevant year of support.
- As the value of the support is dependent on the number of members who have qualified for the world championships of a particular year, the value of the support will be calculated and paid after the last qualifying race for the world championships for that particular year.
- If in the event that the qualifier elects not to travel/compete for whatever reason or leave the club before they compete in the world championships – the eligibility for support will be declined and any funds presented will need to be returned to the club
